Research chairs, centres and groups

The School of Industrial Relations (ÉRI) maintains close ties with highly regarded research bodies, some of them based here at the School. These ties lead to extensive research and specialized seminars and national or international symposia in all fields related to labour and employment, in addition to helping attract international scholars for short or long stays, and fostering student and faculty exchanges.

Canada Research Chair in Globalization and the Work World

Gregor Murray, a professor with the School of Industrial Relations, holds the Canada Research Chair in Globalization and the Work World. The goal of the Chair, located at the ÉRI, is to study the impact of globalization on the work world. It also aims to facilitate the renewal of institutions and the development of tools to enhance the work world in a context of globalization.

Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work (CRIMT)

Since 2002, the School of Industrial Relations has been home to the Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work. The ÉRI Chair and many of its professors are members, along with more than 60 other professors from different Canadian, American, South American, European and Australian universities. The CRIMT is headed by Gregor Murray, a professor with the School of Industrial Relations.

The general issues studied by the CRIMT stem from the far-reaching economic and social global transformations we are currently witnessing. Globalization, the emergence of new corporate production models and changes to regulatory institutions governing employment are all factors that are shaping the many developments and phenomena observed on the labour market and within companies.

The Centre's research revolves around 3 main themes:

  • The consequences of new production models on social relationships in the organization.
  • Workers' means of representation, unionization and collective bargaining.
  • Changes in the economic and state regulation of employment.

These economic and social transformations are of interest not only to researchers, but also of great concern to managers, union organizations and decision makers responsible for developing work-related public policy.

The Centre d’études ethniques des universités montréalaises (CEETUM)

The Centre d’études ethniques des universités montréalaises (CEETUM) is an inter-university and multidisciplinary research centre which brings together researchers from seven universities. By participating in international projects and networks, the Centre specializes in the study of ethnic relations in Quebec, Canada and worldwide. The Centre includes members most notably from the Université de Montréal, which manages the Centre, the Université du Québec à Montréal, the Université de Sherbrooke and the Institut national de la recherche scientifique. The theoretical perspective defining the CEETUM’s research program addresses the persistence of ethnicity under its different markers as an explanatory factor for inequalities or as a launching pad for important debates surrounding models of citizenship. The CEETUM serves a dual purpose: bringing together academic studies and society, and the internationalization of research.
